The Craftsman

Quietly excellent, allergic to shortcuts.

Patient precision. They build things that work the first time and keep working after everyone forgot who built them. Fame does not interest them; the standard does.

Strengths

  • Quality without supervision
  • Deep expertise accumulated steadily
  • Documentation and maintenance done properly
  • Error rates that make audits boring
  • Teaches methodically when asked

Blind spots

  • Perfect becomes the enemy of shipped
  • Resists change quietly instead of arguing it
  • Visibility near zero, by choice
  • Becomes a single point of knowledge

Communicating with them

Do

  • Give specs and stability
  • Ask how it works. They love explaining method
  • Announce changes early, with technical reasons
  • Credit the invisible work in concrete terms

Don't

  • Gut their timeline mid-build
  • Reward speed over correctness in front of them
  • Reorganize their domain without consulting them
  • Drag them into performative meetings

Motivators

  • Craftsmanship that gets respected
  • Stable ownership of a domain
  • Time to do it right
  • Tools that work

Demotivators

  • Chronic rush
  • Churn in requirements
  • An interruption culture
  • Praise going to other people's quick hacks

Feedback that lands

  • Technical, specific, unhurried
  • On quality they are harder on themselves than you will be. Calibrate down
  • On speed, agree the 'good enough' bar explicitly per task
  • Written follow-up is welcome here

Stress signals

  • Timelines stretch without communication
  • Retreats deeper into solo work
  • Unusual defensiveness about their area

Delegation

The systems that punish sloppiness: billing, compliance, infrastructure, the calculator everyone trusts. Insist on documentation and a trained backup, framed as protecting the work.

First 90 days

  • Define the edges of their domain clearly
  • Resist assigning urgent hacks in month one
  • Schedule knowledge-sharing as routine, not as an event
  • At week six, ask what technical debt scares them

1:1 questions

  • What's fragile that nobody has noticed?
  • Where is 'done properly' fighting 'done Friday'?
  • What do only you know how to do?
  • What tool or process is wasting your time?
