The Strategist

Cold logic, warm ambition.

Analysis with a kill switch. They do the homework and then actually decide, a combination most teams lack entirely. Expect them to be right slightly more often than is socially comfortable.

Strengths

  • Decisions that are both fast enough and defensible
  • Sees three moves ahead, structurally
  • Ruthless prioritization
  • Kills their own projects on evidence
  • Negotiates from prepared positions

Blind spots

  • Certainty reads as arrogance
  • People costs discounted in otherwise perfect plans
  • Impatient with emotional processing
  • Builds the case, forgets to build the coalition

Communicating with them

Do

  • Engage the logic. They'll respect the fight
  • Bring counter-evidence, not counter-feelings
  • Give them the big ambiguous problems
  • Be efficient

Don't

  • Appeal to tradition or hierarchy as an argument
  • Expect celebration rituals
  • Drag out decisions they consider made
  • Soften analysis to spare them. They'll smell it

Motivators

  • Strategy that actually gets followed
  • Scope over headcount
  • Hard problems where the answer moves the outcome
  • Leaders who decide

Demotivators

  • Strategy decks as decoration
  • Consensus as a goal in itself
  • Emotional decision-making above them
  • Explaining twice

Feedback that lands

  • Brief, precise, consequence-focused
  • On interpersonal cost, quantify it: attrition, cycle time, escalations
  • They optimize what's measured, so measure the relationship damage too
  • Skip the warmth theater

Stress signals

  • Goes around people instead of through them
  • The sarcasm sharpens
  • Unilateral scope grabs

Delegation

Strategy with an execution deadline: market entry, restructuring, the make-or-buy call. Require a stakeholder plan alongside the analysis, weighted equally, every time.

First 90 days

  • One meaty analysis with a real decision attached, in month one
  • Set the norm that coalition-building is part of 'done'
  • Introduce them upward early. They manage up well
  • Watch their first disagreement for scorched earth and coach immediately

1:1 questions

  • What's the plan nobody has asked you for?
  • Whose buy-in are you skipping?
  • What are we measuring that's lying to us?
  • What would you kill today if it were your call?
